This ongoing restructuring demands that remaining employees rapidly reorient their skillsets toward complex problem-solving rather than routine execution.
The narrative of workforce contraction solidified over the past year, accelerating faster than previous years. Evidence points to structural adjustments across the sector; figures indicate over 170,000 workers have been let go in 2026 alone, escalating from the 245,000 losses recorded throughout 2025. Companies across the board are citing AI transformation as the core impetus. For instance, Visa reported eliminating around 2,600 jobs—representing seven per cent of its total staff—as part of its AI-led business transformation. Similarly, WiseTech implemented job cuts affecting roughly two thousand employees, amounting to a thirty per cent reduction, citing direct gains in AI-driven productivity.
Workforce rationalisation is proving to be immediate and significant. The fintech firm Block, operators of Cash App, saw its workforce shrink substantially, down from approximately ten thousand employees to fewer than six thousand, labelling this reduction one of the largest single workforce adjustments explicitly linked to automation in corporate history. Other major players, including Salesforce, have disciplined teams across departments such as marketing and data analytics, trimming staff by fewer than one thousand people.
Automation rarely involves the wholesale deletion of entire job categories. Instead, the impact is keenly felt in the elimination of repetitive, narrow-scope functions. AI tools are proving adept at basic code translation, simple scripting, and routine quality assurance testing. Consequently, the demand curve is shifting sharply upstream. Software developers, for example, must optimise their focus toward designing complex architectures and embedding AI capabilities, while support engineers are becoming expected to resolve incidents independently using advanced tools. Developing expertise in intelligent, high-level testing remains paramount.
While some speculate that the initial entry-level roles will vanish, industry experts caution against wholesale panic. Roles requiring deep, nuanced human judgment, such as cybersecurity analysis or sophisticated system architecture, continue to exhibit a robust demand gradient. Successfully navigating this period requires continuous upskilling, moving beyond simply knowing software to mastering how technology can be combined and managed at the highest systemic levels.
